Community Workshop


GLOWS is working with regional authorities and indigenous community organizations in the Pastaza basin to improve the livelihoods of native people while protecting the area’s ecosystems.

Our Vision for the Pastaza is...
  • Indigenous communities have legal authority over their lands and the management of their natural resources.
  • Indigenous communities enjoy increased economic benefits from the proper and sustainable management of their fisheries resources, applying plans that include management standards and guidelines (e.g. related to gear type, fish-take seasons, etc.), assurances of equity and conflict resolution, and marketing/commercialization support.
  • Indigenous people have the skills to monitor the status of water resources and alert appropriate authorities when environmental problems arise.
  • Petroleum companies operating in the basin apply best management practices (BMPs) to minimize adverse threats and impacts on the basin’s aquatic resources.
  • Indigenous communities and petroleum companies enjoy good relations based on mutual respect, open communication, proper consultation, and full collaboration.
  • Increased collaboration between actors on the Peruvian and Ecuadorian sides of the Pastaza Basin facilitates the implementation of IWRM practices.
  • Indigenous communities have access to potable water and sanitation facilities.

        

     2008 Tasks
    Examples of GLOWS tasks in the Pastaza for 2008:

    Provide support to water resources forums and water management institutions in the upper and middle Pastaza Basin.

     

    Support to Ecuadorian university students for thesis research related to water resources in the Pastaza River Basin.

     

    Support for water quality assessment and monitoring activities in the Pastaza River Basin.

     

    Support increased awareness of biodiversity in the upper and middle Pastaza River Basin.

     

    Support for increased dialogue on hydropower development in the Pastaza River Basin and environmental management strategies for altered rivers.

     

    Foster public – private alliances for IWRM in the Pastaza Basin.

     

    Facilitate collaboration of actors on the Peruvian and Ecuadorian sides of the Pastaza Basin and the consolidation of coordination mechanisms between actors.

     

    Support the implementation of community fisheries management plans in Kandozi indigenous communities near Lake Rimachi.

     

    Consolidate the Pastaza Basin Coordination Committee and facilitate the formation of a basin vision.

     

    Support indigenous federations in order to strengthen the capacity for natural resources management and territorial rights.

     

    Training and capacity building of local environmental monitors and implementation of a monitoring plan in the lower Pastaza Basin.
