The past 30 years have witnessed a
remarkable increase in the level of private sector support for foreign
development. During the 1970s, government accounted for 70 percent of
funds flowing to the developing world, but today that figure is only 15
percent. The vast majority of dollars flowing into foreign
development each year now come from the private sector, as companies
choose to invest not only in their own international expansion, but
also the welfare of the communities into which they are expanding.
Corporations that forge
public-private alliances with the Global Water for Sustainability
program will help to stimulate economic growth, address heath and
environmental issues, and expand access to education and technology.
Because GLOWS works in communities on-the-ground, builds capacity among
local organizations, and strengthens international cooperation, there
are multiple ways a mutually beneficial partnership can be forged
between GLOWS and your corporation.
Sustainable Youth Education and Scholarships
Corporations can bring real change to
communities where they work by sponsoring youth educational
programs
and by providing scholoarships for talented students to pursue advanced
studies. GLOWS collaborates with local organizations to develop
educational programs in local schools, and GLOWS offers advanced
training in the USA for qualified students. Corporations can also
provide mini-scholarships for participants in GLOWS in-country training
courses.

Community Projects
Corporations
can contribute directly to
communities in basins where GLOWS works or elsewhere. For example,
there is a great
need for wells in the Mara and Pastaza basins. By
partnering with GLOWS, corporations multiply the effects of smaller
contributions, and their small projects are effectively
integrated into GLOWS' larger development programs. Other
community
project ideas include reforestation of river banks, small-scale water purification systems in schools, and infrastructural
support for local water user associations.

International Leadership
Corporations
can partner with GLOWS in international events and campaigns to spread
the word about integrated water resources management. GLOWS regularly
organizes events and special panels at international gatherings such as
the Inter American Conference of Mayors and Local
Authorities and World Water Day. Campaigns geared to the general public
reach the maximal number of people and demonstrate a company's
commitment to people where they work.
